An extra £2.4 million has been provided to help councils protect tenants and improve standards in the private rental market.
Heather Wheeler, the Government’s Housing Minister, stated that local authorities already have strong powers to deal with rogue landlords – from fines to outright bans. The Government recognises that the majority of landlords provide decent homes, but there are still a small number who make their tenants live in poor or unsafe conditions.
She commented, “‘Everyone has the right to live in a home that is safe and secure, and it is vital we crack down on the small minority of landlords who are not giving their tenants this security. This extra funding will further boost councils’ ability to root out rogue landlords and ensure that poor quality homes in the area are improved, making the housing market fairer for everyone.”
The extra funding will allow councils to increase their action against those landlords that do not offer fit for purpose accommodation. Councils will be able to work with external organisations such as the emergency services, legal services and local housing advocates and may also be able to support tenants who decide to take action against their landlords.
Those councils that receive the extra funding will be encouraged to share their feedback on what works best in dealing with such landlords, to help other councils tackle this issue in the most effective way.
